Photography

I am a keen photographer and love taking pictures documenting architecture. I have been using a Fujifilm X100T which allows me to take my camera everywhere i go. I recently wrote my Dissertation on What Photography can reveal about architectural and public space where i studied how photography can be implemented into the designing of more human-centred architecture.

Dissertation:

What can Photography Reveal About Architectural and Public Space?

Abstract

Spatial Use

This essay explores the topic of architecture and public space through the lens of a camera, questioning how photography can be used as a documentation and a design tool for architectural spaces. People become the focus of architectural photography when researching movement and use, which is why it is important to understand the ethics involved in using people’s identities for this research. I explore whether architectural photography still has value when the identities of the subjects are taken away.

Photo collages serve as one of the key methods for using photography as a design tool as they can explore ideas quickly without having to focus on technical details. The collage work of Enric Miralles, which is studied in this essay, proves how photography can become more explorative and three dimensional. Studying the work of prominent architectural and artistic photographers such as Fernando Guerra and David Hockeny, this study questions photography’s place in architectural design. Testing the methods explored through the study myself in Kings Parade, Cambridge, has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the thought behind taking a picture of public space, as it requires predicting how people act to truthfully capture it in use.
